José Mourinho slips out his wage to a reporter

Jose Mourinho

Italy’s Inter Milan coach, the flamboyant Portuguese trainer José Mourinho accidently (or not) slipped out his yearly wage to a reporter on last week’s Champions League press conference.
Before the match Inter Milan – Werder Bremen (ended up in a 1-1 draw), Mourinho dared a reporter to give him 11 names for Wednesday’s match without criticizing them afterwards.
The reporter told him he would do it, if he could get a share in Mourinho’s 9 Million Euro yearly wage at Inter.
Mourinho, who’s known to make bold pronunciations, answered him that he doesn’t earn 9 Million Euro for his coaching job, but 11 million Euro. He also added that if you also take the advertising income into account he’ll even earns up to 14 Million Euro a year at Inter.

Not bad for somebody that started out as a translator for Sir Bobby Robson at Sporting Lisboa in the early nineties. When Sir Bobby Robson left Sporting Lisboa to Coach Spain’s FC Barcelona, Mourinho followed him. When Sir Bobby Robson left Barcelona, Mourinho stayed and helped out the new head coach , Dutchman Louis Van Gaal.
Sir Bobby Robson once told he never saw anybody so passionate about soccer and anybody that reads the game as well than José Mourinho.

Benfica

After training the FC Barcelona B squad for a couple of years, Mourinho got the opportunity to get back to his country of birth and coach Benfica in the year 2000. After only 9 league games in the Portuguese Championship he quit his coaching job at Benfica because the newly appointed president of Benfica got an eye on another head coach.

União de Leiria

In January 2001 he started out as the new head coach of União de Leiria. At the end of the season they’ve ended up on the 5th place, the highest place in their club history.
One year later in January 2002, Mourinho was appointed to be the head coach of FC Porto. In his first year at Porto he finished 3rd. He even said he would make Porto Champions next season.
He kept word and lead FC Porto to the top of the leaderbord with 11 points in front of Benfica and he’d won the Portuguese Cup and the Uefa Cup final .
The next year he again won the Portuguese Competition and to top it all he managed to win the Uefa Champions League with a 3-0 win in a surprising final against AS Monaco.

Chelsea

After this he moved to Chelsea and most of us do know his story since then.
In his few years at Chelsea he has won 2 Premier League titles (‘04/’05 and ‘05/’06), 2 League Cup’s (‘04/’05 and ‘05/’06), the FA Cup in 2007 and the Community Shield in 2005. Only the big trophy in Europe didn’t come on this impressive list.

Inter

Now, in his first year at Inter, he has already won the Italian Supercup against AS Roma, beating them on penalties 6-5 after the game itself ended in a 2-2 draw.
Inter’s website has already published an announcement saying that Mourinho, who has a 2 year contract earns a lot less than the amounts that are being told.

My guess is that this is not completely true, I believe Mourinho smile

Cristiano Ronaldo, the best of Europe

Cristiano Ronaldo, the pivotal figure in Manchester United FC’s march to UEFA Champions League glory last season, had more to celebrate today after collecting the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year prize at the awards ceremony in Monaco. The Portuguese international forward was also selected as the Best Forward while there was some consolation for Chelsea FC, the side United overcame in Moscow in May, as Petr Čech, John Terry and Frank Lampard were nominated as Best Goalkeeper, Defender and Midfielder respectively.

Sensational season
Ronaldo scored United’s goal at the Luzhniki Stadium – his 42nd in all competitions in a prolific campaign for his club – and, although he subsequently missed in the penalty shoot-out, United bounced back to become champions of Europe for the third time. It completed a sensational season for Ronaldo, who finished as the UEFA Champions League’s top scorer with eight goals and also won the ESM Golden Shoe having struck 31 Premier League goals as United retained that title. The 23-year-old succeeds AC Milan’s Kaká as the Club Footballer of the Year and is the second Portuguese international to win the prize, after Deco’s success in 2004.

Forward accolade
Ronaldo is the second United player to collect the award after David Beckham in 1999, while Ruud van Nistelrooy was voted Best Forward while at United in 2003. Asked what was the secret of his success, Ronaldo replied: “Work. I think Manchester had a great season and I scored many goals. I feel very proud to be the best forward as I played as a winger - it is very good for me and gives me more ambition to become better. Thanks to all my team-mates and those that voted for me.”

Chelsea cheer
Čech, meanwhile, beat off competition from United’s Edwin van der Sar, Manuel Almunia, Manuel Neuer and Pepe Reina to claim the Best Goalkeeper prize for the second year in a row and the third time overall, having also won the award in 2005. He was presented with his trophy by Peter Schmeichel, the winner of the inaugural prize in 1998. His abiding memory of the season may be his role in the UEFA Champions League final penalty shoot-out in Moscow. He said: “Of course if was difficult because it was only up to me and the five players who would shoot but I tried to remember what I had seen from the videos I’ve watched and what I’d talked about with other goalkeepers - this is what was going through my mind.”

Terry honoured
Terry, who collected his award from Franco Baresi, was previously voted Best Defender in 2005, but was no less delighted about his latest honour. “For me personally it’s an amazing achievement,” he said, adding: “To be a great defender you need a lot of attributes - to be quick, strong, good in the air and you also need plenty of great team-mates around you and I’m very lucky to have that.” One of those team-mates, Lampard, became the first Chelsea player to take the midfield prize – presented this year by Sir Bobby Charlton – and only the second English-based footballer after Beckham’s success nine years ago. He said: “It feels very good. When you see the players that you’re up against there are some world-class players there. I’ve been up for the award for three years now so it’s nice to finally win it.”
